Guided Ultrasonics Ltd. (GUL) provides training, certification and support for inspectors using the Wavemaker Pipe Screening System (WPSS), and related GUL products. A formal GUL training scheme has been in place since 1999 and is being continually revised and updated to keep track with current technology and applications, the latest version can be downloaded HERE (GUL TRAINING SCHEME). The guided wave ultrasonic testing method (GWUT) is significantly different from the standard ultrasonic method (and all techniques related to it). Significant skill and experience is required for reliable interpretation of the signals. Therefore the quality of training and support is critical. Due to large differences in technology level and software tools the GUL training scheme can only be applied to users of GUL Wavemaker Technology. The GUL training has been split into 3 levels: Level 1: Level 1 training consists of and intensive 5 day course that culminates in a written, practical and interpretation exam. All newly qualified technicians require a minimum of 5 days documented field experience under the tutelage of a GUL qualified operator to ensure adequate field performance. Level 1 training course covers: Setting-up and checking equipment and perform tests under default collection parameters. Carrying out interpretation for basic applications (straight exposed pipe and above ground insulated pipe work) Reporting of results and recommendations Fault finding of equipment Level 2: Minimum 5 day course comprising advanced Guided Wave theory, interpretation of complex systems (e.g. buried pipes) and advanced troubleshooting. This course culminates in a written and interpretation exam.
