In the early 1980s ginseng gardens started sprouting up in Norfolk County. Bill Huffman, an electrical contractor, with wife Elizabeth planted their first ginseng garden in 1983. Being a shade loving plant that requires 80% shade to thrive, local growers like Bill made the shade for their gardens from wood lath. That fall, Bill learned ginseng growers in Wisconsin had been shading their ginseng gardens with a polypropylene fabric. After much research, Bill believed the fabric may be a viable alternative to wooden shade which led him to introduce the synthetic fabric to growers in Ontario. The Oakland Shading Company was incorporated in 1986 to meet the growing need of these shade products by ginseng growers. We are proud to say that we exclusively provide fabric that is extruded and fabricated by Synthetic Industries (now Lumite, Inc.) in the United States. Oakland Shading has been owned and operated by the Huffman family for 30 years and we are dedicated to helping you grow your beautiful Ginseng garden.
